The University was opened in 1995. The Civil Engineering Department Undergraduate Program was established two years later, followed by the graduate and postgraduate programs in 2001 and 2004, respectively. Currently, the Department employs 14 full-time teachers, all of whom hold postgraduate degrees and 13 part-time teachers. In addition, 176 students currently attend the Department’s undergraduate program, and 39 and 23 students attend the graduate and postgraduate programs, respectively.

Considering teacher specializations and future trends, research and education can roughly be categorized into five domains, namely, structural engineering, hydraulic engineering, geotechnical engineering, environment engineering, and transportation engineering. All domains focus on offering students a balance between theory and practice. By providing a comprehensive learning environment and the collective efforts of the teachers, 90% of past graduates have successfully entered national research institutes for further education. Some of these institutes include National Taiwan University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Central University, National Chiao Tung University, National Chung Hsing University, National Cheng Kung University, National Sun Yat-Sen University, and National Chi Nan University. A large number of alumni have also successfully obtained their public service qualifications, passing the public service examinations and entering government-owned companies. Other alumni have obtained their civil engineer licenses. A large number of our graduates are currently employed in both the private and public systems, such a private construction-engineering unit, engineering consulting firms, and central city (county) government departments. Overall, the employment rate of our graduates is excellent and diverse.

The mentality of National Chi Nan University is to cultivate graduates that uphold the excellent traditions of the school while demonstrating favorable worldview. This mentality resonates with the “think globally, act locally” trends. Thus, graduates of the National Chi Nan University Civil Engineering Department also aim to achieve this mentality, endeavoring to become a public intellectual. The University has also established incentives to promote foreign language proficiency and self-development, such as subsidization for participating in language proficiency tests. In addition, the University offers English enhancement courses each week. The University also offers physical education courses, such as archery and rowing in anticipation of fostering graduates balanced in all five ways of life .

In response to the knowledge-action integration education policy, the Department introduced the “Professional Internship (3 credit)” and “Corporate Internship (6 credit)” courses this year, offering students the opportunity to engage in credited summer/winter vacation internship or semester-long internship programs. These programs enable students to connect with social enterprises before they graduate and prepare them for the workplace. Although the Department is relatively young compared to the civil engineering department in other universities, the support of the University and the collective efforts of the teachers and students have enabled the Department to continue towards its goals. The honor that you show to the National Chi Nan University Civil Engineering Department will become the pride of the Department in the future.
